Saturday Ride Update

Just a reminder that there are NO Gears Girls rides on any of the long weekends over the summer -- so no Saturday ride this weekend (Saturday, May 22nd).

Also...as we discussed in the clinic on Saturday: if you're interested and able to assist with Gears Girls rides througout the summer, please drop me a quick line. Ride leaders should be intermediate to advanced level cyclists, comfortable leading a group (or riding as sweep at the back of the group), able to read a map (if necessary) and be familiar with group riding etiquette and skills.

Don't forget that Bike 4 Betty is next weekend!!! If you're planning on riding, be sure to register soon!

Hope you all get out and ride a couple times over the long weekend.

See you all soon!

Gears Girls 101 - Saturday, May 15th

This Saturday, May 15th - we'll be having a "Gears Girls 101" session. Note: You must be a member of Gears Girls in order to attend this session; if you have not yet paid your membership or submitted your membership forms and you would like to attend this session, please be sure to drop your completed forms off at Gears Bike Shop before Saturday, May 15th! Read on for details about the session:

What: Gears Girls 101 - An Introduction to Gears Girls and the Group Ride!

When: Saturday, May 15th, 2010

Time: 9am until 12:30pm (we'll be starting at 9am, so don't be late!!)

Where: Lorne Park Hall, 1288 Lorne Park Road, Mississauga - the little grey building just in front of Lorne Park High School (around the corner from Gears). Lots of parking in the school parking lot. Here's a link to a map of the location: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=1288+Lorne+Park+Rd+mississauga+ontario&sll=43.531245,-79.62171&sspn=0.008712,0.027423&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=1288+Lorne+Park+Rd,+Mississauga,+Peel+Regional+Municipality,+Ontario+L5H+3A9,+Canada&ll=43.534985,-79.621696&spn=0.008711,0.027423&z=15&iwloc=A

What's covered: We'll be spending some time indoors chatting about Gears Girls, club direction, rules and etiquette, group riding basics (presented by Peter Hargrove), plus we'll have a brief chat about the importance of nutrition and hydration per our new sponsor eLoad. Following the indoor portion, we'll head outside with the girls of the Eat-Clean Diet Women's Cycling Team to work on various important skills and drills (on the bike) needed for a safe, fun and efficient group ride.

What do I need to bring: yourself, your bike, some warm clothes (who knows with this weather), and a snack if you think you might get hungry.

I'll send out a more detailed agenda as we get closer to the weekend. In the meanwhile, mark the date in your calendar as it will be a worthwhile and important Gears Girls event to attend!

NB: If you're running in the Mississauga full or half marathon on May 16th, feel free to attend the indoor portion of the session. I wouldn't recommend participating in the skills and drills section, but you're welcome to watch!

See you this weekend!

Gears Girls Ride Cancelled - Saturday May 8th

Hi Gears Girls.

I have heard from many of you that you will NOT be riding tomorrow due to the weather. The chance of extrememly strong winds and rain are pretty high for the morning so with that in mind, combined with the fact that many of you will not be riding, I am cancelling tomorrows Gears Girls ride. Sorry about the late notice - I apologize in advance if you don't get this message in time!

We have many rides ahead of us and hopefully much better weather :)

If you do ride tomorrow on your own, use caution if it's windy and remember that sewer grates, manhole covers, and painted lines on the road are extremely slippery when wet.

A couple pictures from this weekend's ride

Thanks for these pictures Lisa...these were taken from a quick stopover in a parking lot - just before the torrential down pour :)

Bike 4 Betty...and first ride of the season

Hi Gears Girls.

Awesome first ride of the season this past weekend ladies! Yes, it was cold and wet...and then humid and wet...and then pouring and freezing...but it was a great ride nonetheless. Considering it was the first time most of us had ridden together, our group looked pretty solid.

As I mentioned before heading out on the ride, our goal this season is to stress the importance of working together as a group - for safety and effeciency reason. Going forward we'll really work on our paceline skills; more to come about this during our clinic on Saturday, May 15th (I'll send info out about this soon).

Also of importance...Bike 4 Betty taking place on Sunday, May 30th! As Founding Sponsors, Gears Bike Shop plays a major role in this annual charity event raising funds for the Betty Walllace Women's Health Centre and the Betty and Buster Lockwood Cancer Detection and Treatment Centre - help support the store that made Gears Girls possible! Check out the website and see if you're interested: (http://www.bike4betty.com/index.html)!

There are ride options for everyone of all ages and all abilities. Keep in mind that the 75k and 100k routes are both hilly, challenging rides. I will be registering for the 75k route - please feel free to join me, but only if you have comfortabley ridden this distance before. If you feel you will require additional support, are not able to ride those distances, or are uncomfortable riding in a paceline, please choose a shorter route. Be sure to ride within your limits!

If you're interested in participating in this event, please register online at http://www.bike4betty.com/index.html. Also, drop me a line to let me know you've registered and which distance you've registered for. As the date gets closer we can make arrangements for a meeting location.

Looking forward to our ride next weekend!
